Habitat: Stems erect; pericarp magenta when fresh; rare in loose sand near top of mostly vegetated dune, high point on gently rolling landscape of Holocene sand sheet. Associates include Artemisia filifolia, Bothriochloa springfieldii, Boute-loua hirsuta, Dalea villosa, Dithyraea wislizenii, Ipomopsis longifolia, Quercus havardii, Schizachyrium scoparium, Sporobolus giganteus.
Reproductive Condition: flowering + fruiting=mid
