Habitat: Upper edge of Abies lasiocarpa forest, with Pinus contorta, some Populus tremuloides, Sambucus, Salix scouleriana, and occ. Artemisia tridentata ssp. Vaseyana. Assoc: Pedicularis racemos, Penstemon attenuatus var. militaris, Potentilla glandulosa, Trisetum spicatum, and Stipa columbiana. Plants common in shade.
