The plants with the larger, broader bracts grew next to the road; the smaller, less vigorous plants were several yards away from the road where runoff was not available. Greasewood - iodine bush community.
Distichlis spicata, Atriplex patula, Bassia.
Size of floral bracts appears to be a function of ecology. This plant has some floral bracts distinctly broader at the base, others not so. It encompasses what might appear to be 2 species all in one plant.
