Egyptian Walking Onion. Bulb at base, covered in reddish scales, white beneath, produces ca. half-dozen cylindrical leaves. The plant produces clusteres of bulblets at tips of greens in mid-summer. The starter bulbs were given to the collector's wife from her mother, ca. 40 years earlier & had been in the family before that for a very long time. According to the collector, the "greens" are the tasty part of the plant & should be harvested when the leaves are erect - eaten like green onnions. Plants should be thinned our fairly often to prevent nematode problems from over crowding.
